Tune Up for Winter in the Canadian Rockies

What are you doing while Alberta golf courses have hit off-season hibernation? The pros at our Canadian Rockies courses say you and your game should never lie dormant. Here are a few tips to share:

The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge
 Winterize Your Golf Bag Now

Colin Snare, PGA Professional at The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge says now’s the time to prevent rust over the winter months. Club heads and shafts should be cleaned thoroughly of mud, dirt and grass that can lead to rust over the winter months. Dry them thoroughly before putting them in your bag – which should also be cleaned inside for hidden food, drink and debris.

Colin also suggests storing your clubs in a cool, low-humidity area that provides consistent temperatures. Keep all head covers on and ensure clubs are standing upright throughout the season.

Regrip, and Retool

Chris Schatzmann, Head Golf Professional at Stewart Creek Golf Club, says now is the time to get your clubs regripped and ready for spring. “Too many golfers play with worn-out grips, making shotmaking nearly impossible,” he says.

Both Colin and Chris advocate mind/body preparation over the winter months as well. “Enroll in a Yin Yoga class now,” says Chris. “The benefits are endless, and you’ll be amazed at your increased flexibility after only a few sessions.”

Practice in indoor facilities where CPGA or PGA members are present can help you retool your swing for winter garage practice – keeping you ahead of your golf buddies for spring golf.
