Canadian Rockies Golf - Award-Winning in Every Aspect

Earlier this week, we received notice of SCOREGolf's biennial rankings.  The pre-eminent golf magazine of Canada ranks courses, resorts, best golf values and more, providing a must-see list of places to play and visit throughout the country.

We were thrilled and pleased to see our Canadian Rockies partners featured so prominently, underscoring our belief that the Canadian Rockies are the country's winners in overall golf vacation experiences.  We're including the news below.

Alberta Claims Best Canadian Golf Destination
Canadian Rockies Golf Consortium Partners Win Top Spots in Best of Rankings by SCOREGolf

(ALBERTA, Canada) – Proving yet again that the majesty of the mountains and the call of the wild make for a premier golf destination, The Canadian Rockies Golf Consortia collected top resort and golf course honors in SCOREGolf’s Best of the Best rankings.

The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge was again voted Best Golf Resort in Canada by the leading national publication, which produces the biennial Canada’s Top 100 awards list. The Fairmont Banff Springs was ranked a quick second behind its sister property in the resort category. Both historic properties include Stanley Thompson layouts.

“It’s the artistry that makes Jasper so superb and Thompson’s vision and imagination that make it so memorable,” said the article of The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course, which celebrates its 85th birthday this year.

Five of the seven golf courses that comprise the Canadian Rockies Golf Consortia were named to the upper tier of SCOREGolf’s Top 100 List of Best Courses list:

The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course (ranked 4th, up one from 2008)
The Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course (Stanley Thompson 18 course, ranked 5th, up from 11th place)
Kananaskis Country Golf Course’s Mt. Kidd (30th)
Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club (32nd)
Kananaskis Country’s Mt. Lorette (47th)

In addition, both Kananaskis Country Golf Course layouts at Mt. Kidd and Mt. Lorette were named to the Best Public $100 or Less list. The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and The Fairmont Banff Springs golf courses were also listed third and fourth respectively in the Classic Courses category, rounding out the destination’s accolades.

“Once-in-a-lifetime golf vacations happen every day in the Canadian Rockies,” said Canadian Rockies Golf spokesperson Gordon Schultz. “We were thrilled to see the destination gain such recognition, knowing all partners - including Silvertip Golf Resort and Canmore Golf and Curling Club – make Alberta a strong draw for golfers everywhere.”

The Alberta group of seven golf courses is branded under the tagline, “Canadian Rockies Golf: Historic. Dramatic. Untamed.” Consortia golf packages can be found at canadianrockiesgolf.ca. Many of the consortia members have received similar awards in the world’s leading golf publications, including Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, Links and others.

CANADIAN ROCKIES GOLF ANNOUNCES FALL FOLIAGE HOTLIST, UPDATED NEWS

Beginning late this month through early October, travelers headed to Canadian Rockies golf courses will see abundant color lining its famed fairways. The Canadian Rockies Golf Consortia (CRG) selected their favorite holes that feature fantastic foliage on its Canadian Rockies Fall Hotlist:

Hole #14, Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course: This par-4, 440-yard hole named Wampum intersperses deciduous with evergreen trees, and offers a spectacular view of the baronial castle-like hotel in the distance. Late-day sun gives this favorite hole a particular glow, surrounded by abundant color.

Hole #4, Mt. Kidd at Kananaskis Country Golf Course: The most photographed hole in Kananaskis Country is a 197-yard, par 3 stunner. The large green appears receptive from the elevated tee, but you will need to take wind and altitude (at 5,000 ft. above sea level) into consideration when determining which club you choose (one less, if you take our recommendation). The backdrop of Mt. Lorette, coupled by the contrasting colors of the evergreens and poplars make this shot even more stunning than normal.

Hole #13, Silvertip Golf Course: The blue tee box is elevated on this par-4, 399-yard hole, which brings the majestic Three Sisters clearly into view. Director of Operations Jason Guyitt recommends a straight tee shot that will heads towards a hill with bunkers to the left and right, providing perfect positioning for an easier 80-90 yard chip shot uphill. “It’s a great hole, but even better view,” he says.

Hole #10, Stewart Creek Golf and Country Club: Named Bighorn, the 407-yard par 4 provides an exceptional autumn atmosphere with abundant aspens towards the green. The elevated tee shot has a grand view of the lush green and wide 10th fairway with the contrasting snow capped Pigeon mountain in the background, definitely photo worthy.

Hole #9, Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge: The 231-yard par 3 named Cleopatra has abundant color from the native aspen trees to the right side of the fairway in September.

Hole #16, Canmore Golf and Curling Club: The 444-yard par 4 is lined by trees that produce bright yellows and oranges in fall.

A Morning in the Life

Working in the golf business and further working at a golf course in the Canadian Rockies is easily one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences!

Our morning begins just prior to the first light of the day and starts for us with the sun peaking over the east mountains to light up the uppermost tip of Mt. Kidd. What makes this moment extraordinary is that there is a brief period (5 minutes) where the peak of the mountain has a stunning red hue to it. Literally in the 6th minute, the color transforms from a red hue to an orange hue and for a few more minutes we get to enjoy this breathtaking display before the coloring returns to normal. It is almost like nature is rewarding the early riser with something extra special to feast the eyes on.

I don't know if it is just me but the other thing I find so unique about a morning in the mountains is the senses seem to be at a heightened level of consciousness. The aroma of pine and spruce needles from the trees seem to fill your sinuses after the moisture from an overnight rain or simply from the dew. The smell of fresh cut grass, the the chirping of birds penetrating the morning air while the coyotes, deer, elk and sometimes bear make their way on and off the course before our first guests arrive.

There is never a day, a view or a sound that is the same. Each angle of the sun's rays on the rugged mountain peaks expose new and different perspectives. I personally could never tire of the daily opportunity to witness first hand these spectacular mountains and everything that goes along with them.

Two weeks ago this rainbow appeared over the golf courses and this is just a snapshot (literally) of what we get to witness in a Morning in the Life....in the mountains!
