Golf in Canmore

A recent article in the Banff Crag and Canyon provides the best insight into the unique area of Canmore, made all the more noteworthy by the insights of Canmore Golf and Curling Club's own Darren Cooke.  We knew you'd want to share this story with your mates.

The good people, the good earth that is Canmore golf

Posted By By Eddie Hunter

If you have gone to the Internet for instructions to get to the Canmore course avoid the one that says, "You leave Edinburgh heading towards Firth." That is the Canmore in Scotland. Our Canmore will be in the morning sun at the south end of Mt. Rundle in the Canadian Rockies; about three minutes off the Trans-Canada Highway.

The Scottish course may be older but this Canadian course has a history like no other in the world; and you feel it.

It started in 1926.

For those who worked underground in the Canmore coal mines it must have been a treat to create something green on the surface. They started with four holes that had to avoid the mad little steam engine that carried coal from the mines.

A lone Scot, who missed the game from his homeland, did not start it but it could have been. These people were from, Finland, Poland, Scotland, Britain and several European countries. The cooperation / energy, that grew from those hard working people and their dedication to golf, lives today in this beautiful eighteen hole course and the local people that carry this proud heritage.

Picture Perfect Golf in the Canadian Rockies

Brandon Tucker of golfchannel.com and worldgolf.com is a great fan of the Canadian Rockies. Check out his post on his favorite holes in Alberta.
_______________________________

With the PGA Tour RBC Canadian Open upon us, all eyes shift to the north as we uncover some of the region's best golf holes. If there was ever a golf vacation destination rife with signature holes, it's Alberta's Canadian Rockies.

Canadian golf architect Stanley Thompson, who built the region's first two internationally acclaimed golf courses, built some epic holes through two of Canada's finest national parks, Banff Springs and Jasper Park.

And the small collection of golf courses that has come along in the modern era have followed suit with their own dramatic holes that are sure to stick around in your brain for awhile.

The best holes of Alberta's Canadian Rockies can be intimidating, but exhilarating to boot, bringing their mountain backdrops to life. Here's a sample of some of the best at each of the six golf clubs, as well as a worthy runner-up.

Click here for the entire story and Brandon's favorite holes to play.

Don't Take our Word For It..

This week, a group of American writers are visiting the Canadian Rockies for an exceptional week of golf and adventure.

They're blogging their early experiences as they play through Kananaskis Country, Canmore, Banff and Jasper Park, and we know you'll want to read their stories.

Ken Kasey, Birmingham News:  "Just 2 days into a week-long golf trip in the Canadian Rockies -- and it's been pretty awesome so far. We played Mt. Kidd at the 36-hole Kananaskis Country facility, and the Robert Trent Jones-designed course was excellent. The weather was a nice break from the heat and humidity of Alabama."

Read the entire blog here:  http://blog.al.com/golf/2010/07/rocky_mountain_way_part_i.html

Jason Deegan, World Golf Wire:  "Visiting and playing the famous layouts at Banff Springs Golf Club and Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course have always been high on my life list, but I can't wait to experience the other top golf courses in Alberta: The 36-hole Kananaskis Country Golf Course, Canmore Golf & Curling Club, Silvertip Resort and Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club."
